Glace Bay Area Elementary School New School Project

Glace Bay Area Elementary School

The provincial government announced in May 2025 that a new elementary school to replace Tompkins Memorial will be built on property behind the current school location in Reserve Mines.

The school, which will have room for 240 students, will now enter the design phase. This phase will include a steering team with parents, community members and school staff who will provide input on the design.

Further updates will be posted as this project progresses.

Background

Following the announcement of a new elementary school (PP-5) in the Glace Bay area, the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development requested that the Department Public Works (DPW) conduct an evaluation to recommend a site for construction of the new school.
The province invited all students, families, and residents of the Glace Bay area to share their input into this process. The input will be considered by the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development in making the final decision on the site for the new school.

Additional Resources

Following the Governor in Council Education Act Regulation, the Department of Public Works assessed various locations to ensure they were recommending a site that will meet the needs of the new school. The report, prepared by the Department of Public Works, provides information on the sites assessed and the recommended site:
