The 2026 African Heritage Month provincial theme, “Strength in Unity – Moving Forward with Purpose, Prosperity, Power and Progress,” speaks to the power that comes when African Nova Scotians and people of African descent stand together with a shared sense of direction. It recognizes unity as an active force for change that strengthens communities, advances justice, and creates new opportunities.

As we pause to reflect on African Heritage Month and this year’s theme, it’s important to recognize that while February is an opportunity to celebrate the rich history of African Nova Scotians, the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education remains focused on this important part of our heritage every day of the year.
Children and staff are provided educational and professional development opportunities throughout the year and diversity, equity and inclusion are key components of curriculum. Throughout the month, children and staff across CBVRCE will continue to have these important conversations.
Schools are working to incorporate African Heritage into their curriculum in a variety of ways. A highlight of the month will be the annual Black Reflections Art Gallery, which will feature student art work at the Menelik Hall in Whitney Pier on February 11 and 12.
Each of our schools have a range of age-appropriate resources to help support teaching and learning in a culturally-responsive and safe environment. If students or parents/guardians have questions or would like suggestions about reading materials and/or other resources that may be accessed outside of school, they are encouraged to contact their teacher/school directly.
