The provincial government announced in May 2025 that a new northside middle school to replace Sydney Mines Middle School will be built next to Memorial High School.

The school, which will have room for 260 students, will now enter the design phase. This phase will include a steering team with parents, community members and school staff who will provide input on the design.

Further updates will be posted as this project progresses.

Background

Following the announcement of a new middle school in the Northside area, the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development requested that the Department Public Works (DPW) conduct an evaluation to recommend a site for construction of the new school.

Following an evaluation of potential sites as outlined in section 14B (3) of the Governor in Council Education Act Regulation there were limited options available for a site to build a new school as is outlined in the Site Selection Report.

The province invited all students, families, and residents of the Northside area in to share their thoughts and ideas. The information was provided to the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development for consideration in advance of making the final decision on the site for the new school.
